Issues : Long accents

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Long accent in A (→FC)

in FE (→EE)

Short accent in GE1

in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The analysis of the  or  markings, written by Chopin in A in these and analogous bars, leads to the conclusion that, despite significant differences in length (from a long accent to a two-bar hairpin), all of them most probably denote long accents. Due to that reason, in the main text we decided to unify them; we adopted a compromise  marking, which is more or less one-bar long. In the remaining sources Chopin did not interfere with the shape of those markings.

b. 6

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No mark in AI & GE2

Long accent in AF & GE1

Short accent in FE (→EE)

..

The shorter bottom arm of the accent in AF caused the mark in FE (→EE) to have been reproduced as short. The absence of the accent in GE2 is most probably an oversight.

b. 6-14

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

Long accents in A

Short accents in FC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

In A all accents in b. 6, 8 and 14 are clearly long, which, however, was misunderstood both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE).

b. 6

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Long accent in A (→FE)

in GE

Short accent in EE

..

The long accent entered into A was quite accurately reproduced in FE; however, GE and EE considered it vague and reduced to a more typical form, i.e. a diminuendo hairpin in GE and a common short accent in EE.

b. 7

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Long accent in A (→FE)

Short accent in GE

No mark in EE2

Accent & dots in EE3 (→EE4)

..

EE2 does not have the accent added in EE3 (→EE4) together with staccato dots under the quavers (probably by analogy with bar 15). In GE a short accent was applied and moved over the crotchet. In the main text we preserve the notation of A (→FE).
