In this context, the absence of a  sign is almost certainly an oversight by the engraver or Chopin. The sign added in EE is certainly an arbitrary revision, incorrect due to the chord change on the 3rd beat. In the main text, we propose an addition consistent with the harmonic course.

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

No sign in A

Lack of the  sign in A, intended or not, is symptomatic – Chopin did not want to precise the moment of the pedal's release or he was uncertain how to mark it (cf. the Prelude in C minor, Op. 45, bars 5-6 and analog.). The composer could have meant a gradual release of pedal, which was impossible to write adequately with the help of the adopted system of signs. In this situation, the signs in FE and EE, although undoubtedly authentic, are probably to be considered as an approximate proposal.
The sign added in GE is certainly non-authentic.

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

No sign in A (→FEGE1)

The absence of the  asterisk in this place is rather to be considered to be an inaccuracy of notation, hence in the main text we suggest to add the sign. A similar revision was performed already in EE and GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5).

We consider the missing  mark in FE to be an inaccuracy, perhaps by Chopin, since the same version is to be seen in bar 52. In the main text we suggest a  before the 3rd crotchet, after the markings of FE in bars 17-18; this is how the notation of FE was supplemented in EE. The mark in FC is most probably written too late, although in this case the harmonic sequence does not rule out such pedalling.

No markings in A1

The pedalling markings are featured only in the sources coming from [A2]. In both copies based directly on the autograph, the second  mark is written only just under the 4th beat of the bar, which is rather a patent inaccuracy, corrected both in CB and EL. We introduce this correction also in the main text. CJ is devoid of the second  mark.
