b. 8

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

A possible reading of the slur in A (→GEFEEE)

The slur of A interpreted in context

..

In A, the extent of the slur is not quite clear. The interpretation adopted in GE (→FEEE) is possible, yet in our opinion a longer slur, reaching the crotchet on the 2nd beat of the bar, is much more likely.

b. 8

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

A long accent in A

A short accent in  GE (→FEEE)

..

In A, the difference in notation of the two R.H. accents in this bar is very pronounced. Nevertheless, the second one - the long one - was in GE (→FEEE) reproduced as a short one.

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

Articulation in  A

FE (→EE)

GE2 (→GE3)

..

We give the precise notation of A, which later underwent gradual distortions in GE1 and FE (→EE): first  the omission of the dot and moving of the accent, then lowering of the curved line. As a result, in FE (→EE) the note a is sustained, which almost certainly goes against Chopin's intentions, as changes did not have the nature of corrections at any stage

b. 8

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

..

The accidental before the last crotchet of the L.H. is placed inaccurately in A, so it is not clear to which of the lower notes of the chord it was supposed to refer. Most arguments point to the reading of those notes as g-b flat. This is the version given by all the first editions.

The end of slur in AI

LIteral reading of A (→GEFEEE)

Contextual interpretation of A

..

In A it is not quite clear where this slur ends, but in AI it definitely reaches f1 in bar 9, just like in A in analogous bars 28-29. Therefore in our main text we extend the slur to f1.
