Issues : Chopin's hesitations

b. 68-69

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

In A one can see here crossings-out and corrections in both parts; however, we were able to decipher only some of the crossed-out versions. The 2nd beat of b. 68 could have featured e (with a ) in the L.H. and c1-g1 in the R.H. It must have been d-f that was on the 3rd beat in the L.H., perhaps as a correction of the version with d only. In the R.H., the top voice was not being changed, whereas the bottom one contained c1-f1 (to which Chopin eventually returned) and then a sole c1 note. At the beginning of b. 69 one can see two crossed-out L.H. crotchets – G-d-g, which were probably written first, and G-g.

Chord without g2 in AI

Chord with g2 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In AI Chopin deleted the g2 note in the chord in the middle of the bar. Its presence in FE (→GE,EE) reveals the return to the original version.

b. 69-94

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

..

In the previous autographs the reprise is marked in an abbreviated manner with Dal Segno or Dal Segno al fine (in As the return is indicated only with segno). At the same time, Chopin put it in different places, as both the eight-bar link (bars 69-76) and the beginning of the reprise have a different form in various sources:

  • in As there is no link at all, although the reprise begins with a trill in bars 77-78; the return leads to bar 3;
  • in AI the notation ends only in bar 80, after which one returns to bar 9;
  • in AII and AIII after bar 76 one returns to bar 5.

Due to the reasons discussed in the characterization of As, we write out the reprise in this autograph until the end of the text of this source in bar 108.

Slur over 8 bars in AI & A (→FEGE,EE)

Slur from quavers in AII & AIII

..

In the presentation autographs Chopin was undecided how to lead the slur over these bars – in AI he embraced with it already the initial trill, however, in the next two, the slurs begin only from the quavers in bar 73. Eventually, Chopin returned to the initial concept of a slur over the entire link. The slur of AII, interpreted literally, does not suggest a link with the further part (repetition of bar 5), which, taking into account the continuous slur in bars 1-10, has to be considered to be an inaccuracy of notation.

b. 70

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

The first L.H. octave was being changed a few times in A. Among the crossed-out versions, there was certainly a G-g octave (first on the left) and most probably also an E-e octave (second on the left). The third crossed-out crotchet could have been a G-g octave (again) or a G-d-g chord. Anyway, it seems certain that the eventually written E-e octave is not a mistake, as supposed by many subsequent editors of collective editions.
