b. 137-138

2 slurs in FE (→GE,EE) – possible interpretation

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In FE (→GE,EE), the slur begins from the 1st note of bar 138, in spite of the fact that at the end of the previous bar (a line above) the slur clearly points to a continuation. In two previous similar places (bars 113-114 and 121-122), the slur over the bar line is combined and separated, respectively. Interestingly, in FE, it is exactly the same when the theme returns – a continuous slur in bars 265-266, a separated slur in bars 273-274 and an ambiguous one in bars 289-290. However, in the case of the latter, the slur begins on the last quaver of the bar, which practically excludes an interpretation other than a continuous slur. In the case of the discussed bar, it also allows us to tip the scales in favour of a continuous slur.

Overlapping slurs in A, probable interpretation

Continuous slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A, the slur at the end of b. 137, which ends the line, clearly indicates that it should be continued, yet in b. 138 a new slur begins. This very frequent inaccuracy was interpreted by FE (→GE,EE) as a continuous slur. In the main text we suggest a different solution, since in b. 138 a new theme of the Ballade begins.

b. 140-141

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Slur to end of bar 140 in GE

Slur to bar 141 in FE (→EE)

..

The ending of the slur of GE1 in b. 140 (at the end of the line) suggests that it should be continued, although the last part of the slur is poorly visible. However, there is no ending of the slur in b. 141, and in GE2 the slur clearly ends on f in b. 140. In the main text we reproduce the notation of FE (→EE), confirmed by the slurs in analogous places – in b. 160-161 in GE and 199-200 in FE.

b. 142

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

10-semiquaver slur in A (→FE,EE) & GE

6-semiquaver slur in GC

..

In A (→GC) bar 142 was divided into two lines. It is probably due to this issue that the copyist forgot to continue the slur in the L.H. in the 2nd half of the bar. In GE the slur was extended to the last semiquaver.

b. 146-147

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Continuous slur in A (contextual interpretation→FE,GCGE)

2 slurs in EE

..

The slur in A ends over the last semiquaver in bar 146, last in the line. However, slur in the new line (bar 147) begins far before the bar-line thus indicating a continuation. Comparison with three analogous passages shows clearly a continuous slur as corresponding to Chopin's intent. It was reproduced that way in FE and GC (→GE). Thus the divided slur in EE has to be seen as an inept interpretation.
