2 slurs in GC, GE2 & EE

1 slur in FE

No slurs in GE1

..

The absence of slurs in GE1 is undoubtedly an oversight of the engraver, rectified in GE2. The FE version also results most probably from the engraver's mistake. The slur omitted in FE was added in EE, perhaps at Chopin's request.

End of slur in FE0

Prolonged slur in FE1

Two slurs in FEG (→GE) & EE

..

In FE0 the slur ends on the minim. In the base text to FE1 it was corrected by extending the slur to bar 139 (there is a visible trace of deleting the original slur of FE0). There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of this change, yet in FEG Chopin completed the slurring differently, by adding the second slur in bars 136-140. The latter is also in EE, most probably based on the identical Chopin correction of the base text. Therefore, in the main text we give the version with two slurs, written by Chopin twice. The continuous slur of FE, offering greater flexibility as to the choice of phrasing, may be, however, treated equally.

New slur in GC (→GE)

No slur in FE

Slur continued in EE

..

The continuous slur in EE is probably a result of a misunderstanding, related to the adjustment of the slurs to the changed graphical layout – cf. the note on slurs in bars 132-137. In the main text, we give hence the beginning of the slur after GC (→GE). See also bars 140-141.

Rest in FE

Tied sixth in GE & EE

..

The version of FE without the hold of the e-c1 sixth is earlier – in FEG (→GE) Chopin added the ties and a crotchet at the beginning of bar 140. An identical addition was most probably performed by him in the base text to EE. Due to this fact we adopt it to the main text. However, it should be mentioned that while proofreading the slurring of this phrase in FE1, Chopin ended the slur in bar 139 and did not add the hold of this sixth. Hence, the version of FE1 cannot be considered as definitely rejected.

Slurs in GC (literal reading) & EE

Slurs in GC, contextual interpretation

Slur in GE

..

The range of the slurs in GC is unclear due to the nonchalant way of their notation, as well as due to the transition into the new line of the text (from bar 141). We consider the division of the slurs at the bar line to be the literal interpretation, as at the beginning bar 141 does not include the ending of the previous slur. Such divided slur is also in EE, based on the base text, in which the slurs were most probably added by Chopin (in this fragment). Therefore, we give the version in the main text. According to us, however, the interpretation of the slurs of GC with division after the 1st crotchet in bar 141 is more justified. The slur of GE is rather an emergency option, not determining the phrasing, than an attempt to reproduce the notation of GC.
