b. 32

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

f3 in A

c3 in FE (→GE,EE)

Our suggestion

..

While proofreading FE (→GE,EE), Chopin changed the topmost note of the 1st chord from f3 to c3. We consider this change to be independent from the articulation, which was inaccurately reproduced in the editions. Therefore, in the main text we give a chord in the corrected by Chopin form and with authentic performance indications written in A (a slur and a wedge).

b. 32

composition: Op. 25 No 7, Etude in C♯ minor

Even quavers, no ties in GC (→GE)

Even quavers, ties in EE

Dotted rhythm, ties in FE

FE in simplified rhythmic notation

..

Same as in bar 30, the version of FE, being a result of Chopin proofreading (introducing the dotted rhythm in the top voice and sustaining b1 already from the 5th quaver of the bar), is given by us in the main text in a modified form. The simplified rhythmic notation, in accordance with Chopin's habits concerning this issue, according to us, significantly increases the text's legibility.

The missing ties sustaining the e1-g1 third in GC (→GE) are almost certainly the copyist's oversight.

b. 32

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

..

In FCI d2 is played already at the beginning of this bar. According to us, the version cannot be considered a variant for the final text, since the top voice rhythm is a natural consequence of the length of the phrase, which in FCI is one bar longer than in the version prepared for printing – see the previous note.

b. 33

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, the R.H. part in the entire 2nd half of the bar was deleted and rewritten on the stave above. Insofar as it is possible to interpret the legible fragments, the change probably concerned the rhythmic issues only – it can be seen that the first 8 notes of the roulade were provided with semiquaver beams, 4 notes each, as in the 1st half of the bar. The corrections were carried out in two stages: first, Chopin deleted the final fragment of the roulade, which he then rewrote at the end of the line; it was only then that he deleted the entire 2nd half of the bar.

b. 34-36

composition: Op. 63 No. 2, Mazurka in F minor

Minims in As

Dotted rhythms & crotchets in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Rhythmic comminution of the upper R.H. voice in bars 34 and 36 was introduced by Chopin only when preparing the Mazurka for printing. It is worth noting that in bars 23-24 and 31-32 the direction of changes was the opposite – the version with shorter rhythmic values was the original one (the  rhythm was replaced by a minim).
