Issues : Errors in FE

b. 5-6

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

Longer slur in AI & FE (contextual interpretation→GE,EE)

Shorter slur in FE (literal reading)

..

The fact that the slur is not continued in a new line in FE is most probably an oversight by the engraver, and it was interpreted as such in the remaining editions. A longer slur is also present in AI, which allows us to recognise this version as the only one intended by Chopin.

A minim in A (→GE)

A dotted minim in FE (→EE)

..

In FE (→EE) the upper voice minims at the beginning of bars 6 and 8 are furnished with dots extending their rhythmic values. This contradicts the notation of A (→GE). The error could have resulted from reading the staccato dot on the 2bnd beat as the extending dot for the minim.

Three hairpins in EE4

Our variant suggestion

..

A has only a  mark in the 2nd half of the bar, while FE (→GE,EE3) only   marks in the 1st half. The marks added in the 1st half of the bar are undoubtedly a result of Chopin's proofreading, however, it is not entirely clear in the case of the mark omitted in the 2nd half of the bar. Therefore, in the main text we include the addition performed in FE (interpreting the  mark as continuation of the previous one), yet we do not entirely renounce the hairpins written in A (cf. bar 7). A similar solution was introduced in EE4.

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

..

In FE, in the part of the R.H. there are visible traces of correcting up to six erroneous notes in this bar. The engraver's errors resulted here from the routine approach, assuming the presence of the simplest figuration schemes – .

FE features eas the top note of the sixth beginning the 2nd half of the bar. This patent error was corrected in both pupils' copies, including annotations in this Etude FED and FES.
