b. 14

composition: Op. 28 No. 1, Prelude in C major

Slur in A (→FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

No slur in FC (→GE1)

..

The absence of a slur in FC (→GE1) is undoubtedly an oversight by the copyist, complemented in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 14-16

composition: Op. 28 No. 13, Prelude in F♯ major

Continuous slur in A

Slurs separated in bars 15-16 in FC (→GE)

Slurs separated in bars 14-15 in FE (→EE)

In A the phrase mark in b. 15, which opens a new line, is ambiguous – it starts over the 1st chord, but its shape indicates that it should be a continuation. The ending of the phrase mark in b. 14, dragged far beyond the bar line, is an argument for a continuous phrase mark, which we give in the main text. Therefore, we consider the division of the phrase mark in FE (→EE) to be an erroneous interpretation of A. In turn, in FC Fontana reproduced the continuous phrase mark in b. 14-15 correctly, but he marked its continuation between b. 15 and 16 very inaccurately (b. 16 opens a new line in FC), hence the version of A cannot be guessed on this basis.

b. 14

composition: Op. 28 No. 16, Prelude in B♭ minor

in A

No sign in FC (→GE)

Longer  in FE (→EE)

..

The missing  hairpin in FC (→GE) resulted from an oversight of the copyist. In FE (→EE) the mark is longer due to it having been adjusted to the 2nd half of the bar.

b. 15

composition: Op. 28 No. 7, Prelude in A major

a-e1 in A (→FEEE1) & CGS

e-a-e1 in FC (→GE) & EE2

..

The version of FC (→GE) is most probably a mistake of Fontana. Although the shorter stem of the 3rd crotchet suggests that the additional e was added, it could not have been done by Chopin, who did not proofread FC. That version was introduced – under the influence of GE1 – also in EE2.

b. 15-16

composition: Op. 28 No. 15, Prelude in D♭ major

Slur to bar 16 in A (→FEEE)

Slur to end of bar 15 in FC (→GE)

..

The phrase marks in A are definitely separated after the 1st note in b. 16, as it was 4 bars before. However, the notation may be misleading – the final part of the phrase mark, over b. 15, is very poorly visible (due to low ink levels), while the new phrase mark in b. 16 starts very flat. Consequently, the correct interpretation of notation requires a careful analysis thereof, and Fontana, who was in haste, could have misjudged the moment the phrase marks were divided.
