Issues : Chopin's hesitations

b. 21

composition: Op. 63 No. 2, Mazurka in F minor

f1-g1 in As

e1-f1 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

As includes in this bar only the two R.H. melody notes, which we interpret as an indication that it is the accompanying voices from bar 17 that should be repeated here (see next comment). One can also see that initially Chopin probably wanted to repeat the version of that bar in the melody too – the minim that opens the bar was first written as e1. While preparing the Mazurka for print the composer eventually discarded the notion of diversifying the melody in this bar and maintained a strict analogy with the previous phrase.

b. 22-24

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Ending of the middle part in AI

A (→GEFEEE)

..

In AI, the middle part of the Mazurka ends in bar 22 with two crotchets c2.  The quavers b flat1a flat1 introduce the repeat of the beginning. In A (→GEFEEE) Chopin changed his musical idea, lengthening that fragment by two more bars. See bars 20-24.

b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

e in CLIFE (→GE,EE

d in Ap

..

In Ap Chopin marked the enharmonic change of the bass note in the last chord, however, eventually he returned to the original concept in FE (→GE,EE). Cf. bar 20.

b. 22-23

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

a1-b1 & g1-b1 in AI, A (→GE), FE & EE

f1-a1 & f1-g1 in CDP

..

The version of CDP may prove Chopin's hesitation, as far as the sound of the figures in the R.H. on the 2nd beat of each of these bars is concerned. While AI includes the final version, written without any corrections, in A, next to the final version, one can see the deleted version of CDP (in bar 23 written and deleted twice!).

b. 23-24

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

d1 in chords in CLI

d1-e1  & e1 in Ap

d1 &  before b in FE (→GE,EE

..

Similarly as two bars before, Ap features chords with the span of an octave on the 2nd beat of these bars. In the main text we give the chords with the span of a seventh present in the remaining sources.

In bar 23 there is no cautionary  before b.
