2 sextuplet slurs in A (→FEEE)

No additional sextuplet slurs in GE, our alternative suggestion

1 additional slur in GE1a

..

In the main text we reproduce the additional slurs over the sextuplets, consistently present in A (→FE,EE).
Justification for our alternative suggestion without separate sextuplet slurs – see b. 242-244. The fact that these slurs are partially or completely missing from GE and GE1a is most probably due to mistakes or arbitrary revisions.
The issue concerning the divisions of the top slur are discussed in the next note.

Wedge in A (→FEEE)

Dot in GE

No mark in GE1a

..

In Breitkopf & Härtel publications, an authentic wedge would often be arbitrarily replaced by a staccato dot. The absence of the mark in GE1a is most probably an oversight by the engraver.

b. 252-253

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

The deletions visible in A reveal that Chopin considered the dynamic markings over the R.H. part not suggestive enough and moved them lower, between the parts of both hands. None of the sources reproduced this notation accurately – in FE (→GE) the marks were placed too low, before the L.H. part, while GE overlooked . The revision of EE is noteworthy, i.e. the R.H. chords were moved to the top stave (which we do not include in our transcriptions), and each hand was provided with its own dynamic markings.
