b. 197-198

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Slur in A, GE & EE3

No slur in FE (→EE1EE2)

Our variant suggestion

..

The missing slur in FE (→EE1EE2) is almost certainly a mistake by the engraver. In GE and EE3, the slur was added probably on the basis of a comparison with analogous motifs. (In the case of GE it could have been one of the places possibly corrected by Chopin while proofreading the basis for that edition, while in the case of EE3 a repetition of the slur after GE cannot be excluded.)
In GE2, due to retouches, see b. 195-196, the part of the slur falling on b. 197 was overlooked (the placement of the slur over the bottom voice crotchets was also changed, among other things).

The slur of EE3 was probably added as a result of a comparison with analogous motifs, or perhaps on the basis of GE

b. 199

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Slur in A (→FEEE,GE)

No slur in GE1a

..

The missing slur over the b-d1 thirds must be an oversight by the engraver of GE1a. See also b. 204.

Dots & slur in A (→FEEE)

No markings in GE

..

The missing dots and slur are a patent mistake by the engraver of GE1, repeated by GE1a and subsequent impressions of GE.

b. 220-221

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, there are no rests in the top voice. Chopin would often omit such rests in obvious situations; however, he was not always consistent – cf. b. 216 (without rests) and 218 (with a rest). Anyways, the two-part notation is marked by the direction of the stems. This notation was reproduced by FE, yet rests were added in b. 221, perhaps at Chopin's request. Therefore, in this situation b. 220 having been left without a rest must be considered an inadvertence, hence, to avoid doubts, we add a rest also in this bar in the main text. In GE and EE the absence of a rest prompted the engravers to make the stem of the c minim point upwards, which turned an inaccurate notation into a wrong notation.

b. 233

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

4 crotchets in A (→FEEE)

2 crotchets in GE

..

The version of GE, in which the additional crotchet stems are only at the beginning of both quaver groups, is most probably a double oversight by the engraver.
