GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: V 1836
Plate number: 5666
Title: Deux Nocturnes || Nocturne II
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Appony

GE1 was based on A, and probably perfunctorily corrected by Chopin (e.g. the last L.H. note in bar 5). It also introduced unauthentic changes, e.g. added in bar 71GE1 served as a basis for FE1.

There are copies with different covers and printing methods. In a lithographic version, available from around mid 1860s, few graphical differences occur, e.g. in the scope of dynamic hairpins (i.a. in bar 20), some instances could be just printing flaws (e.g. the shortening of  in bar 8). We do not consider these copies a separate source. The different details occurring there are retained in GE2, and—when justified—discussed while commenting on that source.

The characteristic features of GE1 include:

  • lack of differentiation between various  types of staccato signs – only dots were used, despite the fact that A had both dots and wedges;
  • lack of differentiation between various  types of accents – all such signs were interpreted as ordinary short accents or, in single instances, as hairpins  ;
  • the scopes of slurs and dynamic hairpins were usually adjusted to rhythmic groupings to which they related (most often to beams) , sometimes evidently not in compliance with the base text (eg. slurs in bar 15 or  in bar 47).
