FE4 - Fourth impression of FE

Publisher: E. Troupenas et Cie
Date: 1840-1841
Plate number: T. 891
Title: Sonate
Dedication: None

The latest impression, which was certainly performed with Chopin's participation. Among the introduced changes one can mention:

  • change of a to b in bar 39;
  • change of c2 to d2 in bar 76;
  • correction of the erroneous g-f1 seventh to an a-f1 sixth in bar 141;
  • addition of a  raising g2 to g2 in bar 168;
  • correction of the erroneous A to G in bar 220.

According to us, Chopin's authorship in the case of the change in bar 76 is unquestionable, it is also highly likely in bars 39 and 168. The remaining two could have been performed by the reviser, similarly as the most numerous group of the changes introduced in FE4, consisting of patent additions of accidentals. For example, signs were added in bar 22, 107 and 115, as well as in bar 110 and 145-152. Moreover, cautionary accidentals were added, e.g., in bar 96.

We consider FE4, cumulating three consecutive Chopin's proofreadings, to be our principal source.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a later reprint of FE4, performed in the 1850s by the Brandus et Cie company, which purchased rights to a few works by Chopin from Troupenas. The only difference is the addition of the editorial number of the new owner B. et Cie 6475 and information about the printing house F. Benoit, Grav.-Impr in the footer.
