EE2 - Revised impression of EE

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: ca 1856-1860
Title: Première Grande Sonate || Scherzo
Dedication: None

A later impression of EE1, in which the title of the work was extended, taking into account the already existing second Sonata (Op. 58). The revisions introduced in EE2 were based on, among others, comparison with GE1, e.g.:

  • addition of a  under the part of the L.H. in bar 1;
  • addition of slurs in bar 28, 66, 68 (254, 256), 132-134, ;
  • addition of accents in bar 28, 48 and 236;
  • addition of a cautionary  before d2 in bar 115;
  • addition of c1 in bar 140;
  • correction of the mistake in bar 182;
  • addition of c1 on the 2nd beat of bar 219.

Other changes were most probably drawn from FE4, e.g.:

  • introduction of e instead of e in bar 37 and 225;
  • addition of sharps before the octave grace note in bar 54 and 242;
  • change of f (f?) to e in bar 131;
  • change of ties sustaining chords in bars 273-276.

Another could have been noticed both in GE and FE4, e.g.:

  • natural raising c2 to c2 in the 3rd chord in bar 57 and 245;
  • moving  to the correct place in bar 111;
  • triple change of a to g in bars 118-120.

The changes introduced in EE2 include also routine additions of accidentals – in a few places the edition is the most accurate in this respect, e.g., in bar 4, 143.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a later (ca. 1868) impression, already endorsed by Wessel's successor, the Ashdown & Parry company – see the 1st movement of the Sonata.
