GE1op - First German edtion of Op. 64

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: XI 1847
Plate number: 7721
Title: Trois Valses || No. 3.
Dedication: None

Edition based on a proof copy of FE1 without later corrections introduced by Chopin. It bears traces of both an editorial revision and – most probably – Chopin's proofreading. The most significant, probably authentic, changes include:

  • change of g1 to a1 in bar 49;
  • change of the last chord in the L.H. in bar 60.

From the correspondence of Clara Schumann it follows that she performed a revision of GE1op. According to us, it does not have to exclude participation of other persons in corrections, including Chopin. This original proofreading could have been of a very superficial or even selective nature, e.g., in the form of a letter with a few specific observations.

In GE1op one can see a number of defects, yet the majority of them – in particular oversights of certain signs – may simply reproduce the state of the proof copy of FE being its base text, as it was almost certainly in the case of the slur in the L.H. in bars 121-122. Examples:

  • no slurs in the R.H. in bars 15-22,
  • no dynamic hairpin in bars 51-56,
  • f2 instead of d2 in bar 90,
  • no dynamic hairpin in bars 105-108.
