EE1 - First English edition

EE1 is based on a lost manuscript, most probably [A] or – which is more likely – its copy. The manuscript, already after having been written, was entirely reviewed and corrected by Chopin, so even the versions differing EE1 from the remaining editions can be authentic (e.g., non tanto in the tempo indication). In turn, nothing indicates a possibility of Chopin proofreading of EE1.
The text of EE1 proves that the manuscript base text to this edition took into account a vast majority of the corrections Chopin introduced in GC – the metronome tempo, accents in bars 1-8, change of a
to d1 in the chord at the end of bar 4, a different version of the L.H. in bars 37-38, leggierissimo in bar 41. At the same time, this edition contains indications present in FE, yet overlooked in GC – marcato in bar 25 and 
in bar 50. Therefore, the level of refinement of the text of EE1 equals GC.
Unfortunately, the value of this source is lowered by a number of defects or questionable solutions, as far as their compliance with Chopin notation is concerned:
- shorter slurs in the basic motif of the Etude, particularly in the motifs starting from a dyad (bar 5 and analog.);
- placing marcato in bar 25 under the part of the L.H.;
- mistake in bar 37.
Same as in some other sources, EE1 also lacks a few necessary accidentals, as, e.g., in bars 9, 12-13 and – probably 34.
