b. 85-88

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

..

GE arbitrarily added rests completing the bottom voice of the L.H. – two in bar 85 (only in GE2 and GE3) and one in bar 89 (in all GE). Rests in bar 85 were added also in EE3.

b. 86

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

Minim in FC & EE1EE2)

Dotted minim in FE

Minim with rest in GE & EE3

Most probably, only one of the two rhythmic values of the bass is authentic, however, it is hard to determine which one. It is easy to imagine both an incidental omission and an erroneous addition of a dot extending the minim. In the main text, we adopt the version which in analogous bar 50 appears as the only one.
The rest added in GE – and in EE3 after it – is an arbitrary addition (in GE1 in this and in the next bar, two crotchet rests were erroneously added in each bar).

b. 86

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

g2-e3 in FC (→GE1)

e3 in FE, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

As the 9th semiquaver, FC (→GE1) features a g2-e3 sixth. The unjustified breaking of the rule of figuration structure adopted by Chopin undoubtedly indicates a mistake of the copyist. The error was corrected in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 87-88

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

Minim in FC

Tied dotted minim in FE & EE

Minim with rest in GE

..

The creation of the version of FC may be explained with an oversight of the copyist, who overlooked the dot and tie extending the sound of the d minim. It is also possible that Chopin omitted FC, while adding the sustention of d in the remaining Stichvorlage manuscripts (base texts to FE and EE) – the version of FC would be then the original version. In GE the version was completed with an arbitrary rest (in GE1 two rests were added erroneously).

our alternative variant suggestion

..

The later pedal's release (change), transferred accordingly by FC (→GE) and EE, was changed by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (one can see traces of deletion of the  sign before the 3rd beat of the bar). Alternatively, we suggest a notation including both authentic pedalling in the variant form.
