EE3 - Corrected impression of [EE2]

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: 1835-1836
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. VIII
Dedication: ses amis J. Liszt et Ferd. Hiller

In the first English edition the entire Opus 10 is divided into two books, six Etudes each, while the presented copy belongs to the earliest known impression of the second book. In spite of this, we assign it the EE3 symbol, as on the basis of comparison with the sources of the first book, it may be assumed that there had been two earlier impressions which we mark as [EE1] and [EE2] (see the Etude in C major, No. 7).

EE3 reproduces the text of FE1, in which a number of errors (e.g., all mentioned in the characteristics of FE1) and inaccuracies were corrected, e.g.: the slur in bar 2 was shortened,  marks were added in bars 71 and 75, accidentals were completed, e.g., sharps and a  in bars 41-42,  of c3 in bar 51 and c1 in bar 94, naturals in bars 58-60, flats of d2(3) in bar 72. Moreover, slurs in the L.H. in bars 30, 34 and 56 were completed and  and marcato were moved in bar 38. The most serious arbitrary intervention are naturals changing the harmony, added in bar 25.

In certain situations an oversight or a mistake seem to be more plausible than a revision, e.g., lack of the accent in bar 22, slurs in the R.H. in bar 56.

In accordance with the information on the title page – "edited with additional fingering by his pupil, I. Fontana" – Chopin's fingering was significantly completed in EE3 (in 70 bars in total), see the note to bars 4-8. At the same time, mistakes were not avoided, e.g., in bars 53 or 89.

EE3 was renewed on a number of occasions with different covers – see the Etude in C major, No. 7.
