composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A correct metronome marking in A (→GEFE)

A missing dot in EE

..

The metronome marking in FE is printed inaccurately: the '=' sign is missing and the dot extending the value of the crotchet is only visible in some copies. This is perhaps the reason why the dot is missing in the metronome marking of EE.

b. 1

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

A (→GE2GE3)

GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The value 192 entered in the metronome marking in A raises no source-related or stylistic doubts. Vivid, oberek-like tempo corresponds with the character of the first phrase of the Mazurka (bars 1-20). The same cannot be said about the value 108 appearing in GE1 (→FEEE). As there are no traces of Chopin's intervention, the most probable explanation for the discrepancy is the accidental repetition of the metronome marking from the previous Mazurka in GE1.

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

No indications in JC & PE

in EF

..

The tempo indications in EF, both verbal and metronome ones, are most probably Fontana's additions. It does not mean that they are not corresponding to Chopin's intentions.

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No indications in CLI

in FE (→GE,EE

..

In CLI there are no performance indications in the entire Etude. Both the indication of tempo and articulation was most probably added by Chopin in proofreadings of FE (→GE,EE) – cf. the beginning of the Etude in A minor, No. 2.

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

in Ap

in FEcor

in FE (→GE1GE2, →EE)

in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In the main text we give the tempo indications added by Chopin in subsequent proofs of FE (→GE1GE2, →EE): Allegro already in FEcor, metronome tempo in the next one. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) the metronome marking erroneously displays 114.
Different indications written in Ap may not have a universal value, as the Etude in this autograph differs quite significantly from the published version in terms of pianistics.
