Issues : Omissions to cancel alteration

b. 12

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

..

The sharp returning c2 appears in [A] (→FCGE1) and EE1 only before the 9th semiquaver, which is undoubtedly a mistake committed by Chopin (the composer, same as in many other places, concentrated on marking the top voice only). In the remaining sources, the sign was moved to the correct place (FE and GE2 and GE3) or was only added in this place (EE2 and EE3).

b. 12

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

This bar was entirely crossed out in A and rewritten on adjacent staves – the R.H. above the crossing-out, while the L.H. – below. In the readable initial version, the regular steps of the R.H. quavers and the position of the 1st L.H. chord are preserved, while the f1 notes are written enharmonically as e1: . The corrections had been performed before the performance marks were introduced – the crossed-out version did not contain the following elements: accent, staccato dots, phrase mark, dashes marking the range of crescendo and pedalling marks. The  restoring b1 on the 3rd beat of the bar was also missing.

b. 12-13

composition: Op. 28 No. 16, Prelude in B♭ minor

..

In A (→FC,FE) there is no accidental before the 4th semiquaver in the 3rd group, which would result in f2, which is impossible in this context. The oversight of a cancelled alteration, frequently encountered in Chopin's music, was corrected in GE and EE.

b. 13

composition: Op. 28 No. 7, Prelude in A major

..

In A (→FE) and CGS there is no accidental before the bottom note of the last R.H. crotchet. Therefore, it should be interpreted as an a1, which must be a mistake. A was added by Fontana in FC (→GE) and by the reviser of EE. The accidental was also added in FED (with Chopin's hand) and FES.

b. 13

composition: Op. 28 No. 8, Prelude in F♯ minor

f1 in A (→FE1,FCGE)

f1 in FE2 (→EE)

The version with f1, although harmonically possible, is, however, most probably erroneous – in the entire Prelude, in the vast majority of the eight-note figures, the 3rd demisemiquaver is placed a half a tone lower than the 5th one. Therefore, the natural added in FE2 (→EE) is most probably an accurate addition, although Chopin's participation in that intervention is uncertain.
