b. 8

composition: Op. 30 No. 2, Mazurka in B minor

..

In FE the last R.H. note is a crotchet, as a result of which the bar includes 7 quavers. In the main text we correct this mistake after the FC notation (→GE); this version is also in EE.

In AFC3 (→FEIE), EE minim cis not dotted. In the main text we present the dotted variant. Compare annotation in b. 4.

No prolongation in FESB

..

The b2 note, provided with a ten., is prolonged to a crotchet in A (→GEFE,EE). It seems to be Chopin's mistake, since such a long value would have to be held also at the beginning of the 2nd half of the bar, which would certainly be a mistake. To avoid doubts, we change it to a quaver, almost exactly corresponding to its actual length. The fact that FESB omitted that extension could have resulted from that erroneous notation, with which the engraver did not know what to do.

b. 15

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

..

The second chord in the R.H. is a crotchet both in the upper and lower voices. Hence the lower voice has 9 quavers in this bar. The error resulted from hastily performed articulation corrections – Chopin would delete the staccato signs written inside the chords, which, in some cases, required rewriting the entire chord; omission of the quaver flag occurred exactly in the last rewritten chord.

FC is missing the 3rd beat in the L.H., which was supplemented in GE by adding a crotchet rest. It is also FE (→EE) that contain a rest, hence there are no doubts that it was a crotchet rest that the copyist overlooked. Cf. a similar oversight by Fontana in the Mazurka in D no. 3, bar 55.
