Issues : Scope of dynamic hairpins

b. 1-2

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

  in A (→FEEE)

No signs in FC (→GE)

..

Fontana overlooked the dynamic hairpins in FC (→GE). The notation of A does not specify the range of the marks, since bar 2 was not written out with notes. We adopt the natural interpretation of FE (→EE).

b. 2

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The range of crescendo is marekd in the source heterogeneously. FE and EE have slightly longer hairpins than A (→GE). We give the version which complies with the majority of analogous bars.

b. 2-4

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

No signs in A (→FE)

  in FC (→GE1)

  in EE

  in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The pair of   hairpins must have been added by Chopin in FC and base text to EE. Nothing indicates that Chopin could have wanted to resign from these indications – their absence in A (→FE) is almost certainly a result of haste and insufficient attention at the time of parallelly introducing corrections and additions in three Stichvorlage manuscripts. Similarly in bars 6-8.
Shortening the  sign in GE2 (→GE3) is most probably an editorial revision or a mistake of the engraver.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 in GC

Longer  in FE (→EE)

No mark in GE1

Shorter   in GE2

..

According to us, out of two sources based directly on [A] – GC and FE – it is the copy that may convey a more accurate representation of this place in the autograph, since the text in FE is too tightly packed.

b. 3

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The range of diminuendo is marked in the source heterogeneously. In A (→GE) the hairpins were lead from the 2nd triplet group to the penultimate quaver. In FE the tie is moved slightly to the left in comparison with A. In EE the hairpins are below the 2nd and 3rd group of the triplet. We adopt A's version.
