Issues : Scope of dynamic hairpins

b. 9

composition: Op. 28 No. 4, Prelude in E minor

No signs in As & CGS

  in A

  in FC

  in FE (→EE) & GE

..

The arms of the  hairpin in A are of different length; however, in this case it is almost certain that it is the top arm that has to be taken into account – an extension of the bottom arm to the left would make the dots over the L.H. minim blurry. In FC the mark is shorter, and in the editions the range of the mark was adjusted to the group of quavers, which is actually of no significance in this case.
The absence of both marks in CGS is most probably an oversight.
As has no hairpins, and the long accent in the previous bar is the only mark of this type.

b. 9

composition: Op. 28 No. 9, Prelude in E major

in A (→FCGE)

in FE (→EE) & CGS

..

The difference in the length of the arms of the  hairpin in A is too insignificant to hamper the identification of their range. In spite of that, the mark in FE (→EE) was led – contrary to A – to the end of the bar.

b. 10

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The sources differ in placing the ending of the diminuendo hairpins. In A they end just before the 8th quaver, in FE and EE on the 6th, while in GE on the 9th quaver.

b. 10-11

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

 in AW

 in CDP, FE & EE

 in GC (→GE)

..

All three ranges of the  sign are most probably authentic. In the main text we give the  hairpins on the basis of GC (→GE). The range of the sign in these sources is in the middle between the hairpins in AW and those in CDP, FE and EE.

b. 10

composition: Op. 28 No. 9, Prelude in E major

in A

in FC (→GE)

No sign in FE (→EE) & CGS

..

The arms of the  hairpin in A are of a different length. In the main text we interpret it on the basis of the bottom, shorter arm, while FC (→GE) took into account rather the top one. The absence of the mark in FE (→EE) is most probably an oversight.
