b. 240

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No indication in AsI

marcato from 1st quaver in A

marcato after first quaver in GE (→FE,EE,FESB)

..

The change in the placement of the marcato indication, introduced by GE1 and the remaining editions, does not seem to be accidental; however, its authenticity remains uncertain. Therefore, in the main text we give the version of A, considering the notation of GE (→FE,EE,FESB) an equal variant.

b. 242

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

Neither AsI nor A contains the flats restoring B-b on the penultimate semiquaver in the bar. Due to the analogy with bar 240, it must be Chopin's oversight. The accidental (one was enough, since the octaves were written down in an abridged manner) was added by GE (→FE,EE,FESB). See also bar 244.

b. 242-244

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Semiquavers after AsI

Dotted rhythm in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

In AsI the rhythm on the 2nd quaver in bars 242 and 244 – two semiquavers – in the piano reduction is compliant with the parts of the individual instruments. In A (→GEFE,EE,FESB) Chopin replaced the semiquavers with dotted rhythms; however, he left the orchestral part unchanged. The change is undoubtedly final.

Wedges in b. 242, 244 & 247 suggested by the editors

..

At the beginning of bars 242, 244 and 247 some – in bar 244 all – sources omit the wedges over the 1st L.H. octave. These are the engravers' mistakes or Chopin's oversight. We provide all 3 marks in the main text.
