Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 37-38

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

cc-c1d-d1 & C-c1 in AsI, contextual interpretation

C-cC-cD-d & C-c in A (→GEEE,FESB)

C-cC-cd & c in FE

..

The AsI version corresponds closely to the orchestra part. In the version prepared for printing, Chopin moved these bars an octave lower, presumably to preserve the ascending sequence of these orchestral interludes. While proofreading FE1 this fragment was modified once again by removing the octave doublings of two bass notes, D at the end of b. 37 and at the beginning of b. 38. We include this undoubtedly Chopin's correction in the main text.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

in A (→GEEE,FESB)

No sign in FE

..

In the main text we keep the  hairpin present in A (→GEEE,FESB). It seems that an oversight of the engraver of FE1 (→FE2) is a more likely explanation for its absence than a possible removal of the mark by Chopin (which he could have done while proofreading FE1).

b. 109

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

The last semiquaver in GE1 (→FE1) is an erroneous a3 note. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3,FESB) and – perhaps at Chopin's request – in FE2.

2 quavers & crotchet in AsI & A (→GEFE1,EE,FESB)

3 quavers in FE2

..

In FE1, there are 3 crotchets in the bottom voice, which is a mistake (we reproduce them in our system in the "transcript" version only), which was corrected in FE2 by adding a quaver beam combining all 3 notes. We give this version, probably the latest authentic one, in the main text.

See also the note at the end of the bar.

2nd quaver without f2 in AsI & FE

Chord with f2 in A (→GEEE,FESB)

..

The version without f2, introduced – most probably by Chopin – at the stage of proofreading FE, is also a version that was entered into AsI, in which the note was also removed (deleted, like f in the L.H. on the same quaver). Therefore, if the correction to AsI preceded the preparation of A, we are dealing with Chopin's hesitation, who changed his mind on the presence of this note three times. Another possibility would be the initial version having been erroneously entered into A.
