In the main text we reproduce strictly 5 differentiated staccato marks written in A. The version of the editions most probably resulted from a double revision of GE1 – the marks having been standardised (see bars 271-272) and a wedge having been added over the 6th quaver. Leaving the last quaver without a mark can actually be considered Chopin's oversight, hence the addition of the wedge, judging from its different shape, introduced only just in the stage of proofreading GE1, can be seen as Chopin's intervention. The use of a wedge instead of a dot would be then a compromise taking into account the reality of an already printed proof copy including wedges only in this bar.

We consider the added wedge in the L.H. part to be an apt specification of articulation, regardless of whether it was done at Chopin's request or not. In AsI staccato marks are absent both here and in the next bar, while the slur over these bars (see bar 376) proves that it was not caused solely by the working nature of the manuscript; back then, Chopin was most probably still pondering this kind of performance.

In AsI the last three staccato marks are dots, and not wedges, as the first three and as it is in the published version. The difference between the markings of the first and second half of the bar also concerns slurs – see the next note. All these markings are only in the R.H. part and only in this bar, hence it seems that Chopin was checking here what different variants of markings of this figuration look like. Having eventually opted for wedges and two-note slurs, he wrote them in A in the entire passage.
