b. 329-330

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

As in many similar situations, in A the majority of the necessary accidentals are missing – Chopin wrote accidentals only to the 2nd quaver in bar 329 (e2-e3-g3-e4) and the next semiquaver (b3), the penultimate semiquaver in bar 329 (b1), the bottom note of the 2nd triplet in bar 330 (g) and the bottom note of the 6th triplet in bar 330 (d1). Assuming that the accidentals of the first two-quaver figure of the passage are also valid in the second one, all necessary accidentals were already added in GE1 (FE,EE,GE2FESB,GE3). In FE a  to e2 on the 4th L.H. quaver in bar 329 was also added.

b. 330

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In GE3 two Terzverschreibung mistakes were committed in this bar – g1 instead of e1 on the 2nd semiquaver in the bar, and C instead of E on the 2nd L.H. quaver.

Long accent in AsI

 in A

 in GE (→FE,EE)

..

According to us, the version of the editions resulted from inattention of the engraver of GE1, who did not notice the change of dynamic indications at the end of the bar. The crescendo in A emphasises the dissonant chord, introducing E major as a new key, constituting the starting point for further modulation. The accent in AsI confirms that from the very beginning Chopin wanted to underline the chord on the 6th quaver in the bar.

Our variant suggestion

..

In the main text we include – in a variant form – the fingering entered into AsI, complementing the fingering of A. The digit '1' added in FESB on the penultimate semiquaver in bar 331 is either a correct revision or a fortuitous mistake – in this edition there is no staccato mark over this note, which was perhaps interpreted as a digit.
