Slur from a1 in A, possible interpretation

Slur from b1 in A, literal reading

2 slurs, lower from b1 in GE (→FESB)

2 slurs, lower from a1 in FE & EE

In AsI there are two versions of the group of demisemiquavers: a 4-note one, as in bar 78, and a supplemented 6-note version, as in the remaining sources – see the note above. The meaning of the arc entered under this group is not clear – we assume that it is a tie to a1, but it is possible that it was intended to be a slur referring to demisemiquavers. The range and meaning of the corresponding slur in A and GE1 (→GE2) are also unclear; consequently, each source can be interpreted twofold. Moreover, in GE (→FE,EE,FESB) a second slur was added over the group (most probably arbitrarily). All in all, there are 4 different combinations of slurs, out of which to the main text we choose the slur of A, interpreted literally.

No fingering in A (→GE1FE,EE)

3-2-1 fingering in GE2 (→FESB)

3-1-2 fingering in GE3

The fingering added in GE2 (→FESB), whose authenticity is, after all, questionable, must be erroneous in this case. However, it is uncertain whether the mistake consisted in printing a wrong digit (2 instead of 4) or in switching the order of digits (2-1 instead of 1-2). GE3 applied the latter.

In the majority of the sources there is no accidental to the 8th semiquaver in b. 104 and 108. Admittedly, any doubt is dispelled by the following f3 semiquaver, but the absence of the  restoring f3 after f2 at the beginning of the bar must be considered a mistake due to the rule (frequently applied in the sources of the Variations) according to which accidentals are valid at a given pitch regardless of the use of an octave sign – cf., e.g. b. 35, 39 or 335. Therefore, we add them both in the main text and in the content transcriptions of the sources (versions "edited text"). Naturals were also added in GE3.

The last semiquaver in GE1 (→FE1) is an erroneous a3 note. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3,FESB) and – perhaps at Chopin's request – in FE2.
