4 notes in AsI, original version

6 notes in AsI, supplemented version

Slur from a1 in A, possible interpretation

Slur from b1 in A, literal reading

2 slurs, lower from b1 in GE (→FESB)

2 slurs, lower from a1 in FE & EE

In AsI there are two versions of the group of demisemiquavers: a 4-note one, as in bar 78, and a supplemented 6-note version, as in the remaining sources – see the note above. The slur visible there could have been added after this change to emphasize the new, irregular rhythmic grouping. It would then be a simplified designation for an irregular group (without a digit). Another possibility is a tie connecting the two a1 quavers of the lower voice, resulting in a crotchet as in the final version. We consider this second possibility more likely and we accept it as the text of AsI.

The range and meaning of the slur under the demisemiquaver group are also unclear in A and GE1 (→GE2):

  • In A it seems to be a slur, marking the sextuplet together with a digit (6). However, the slur does not reach the 1st note (a1), as a result of which it probably marks the non legato articulation of five demisemiquavers, starting from b1.
  • In GE1 (→GE2) the beginning of the slur is placed between the 1st and 2nd demisemiquavers, hence it can be interpreted as spanning 6 notes (as it was understood by FE and EE) or 5 notes (as it was reproduced in FESB and GE3). Taking into account the fact that GE1 added over the demisemiquavers a sextuplet marking consisting of a digit and another slur, we interpret the notation of GE1 that other way, hence in accordance with A, FESB and GE3.

In the main text we give the slur of A, interpreted literally, encompassing 5 notes provided with dots.
