  b. 342-343

Slur in b. 341-344 in AsI

Slurs in b. 341 & 343 in A (→GEFESB,EE1EE2)

3 slurs in b. 341-343 in FE & EE3

2 slurs, our alternative suggestion

Continuous slur, our other suggestion

The missing slur over bar 342 is most probably Chopin's oversight – this is the first bar on a new page, on which the composer returned to writing slurs only just in bar 349. The fact that it was not an intentional omission of slurs is confirmed by the slur added in the stage of proofreading FE. The added slur could be considered a compromise between the intentional phrasing, which was probably the one written in A in analogous bars 355-357 and 359-361, and the ease of implementation of corrections. This would explain why the intervention was limited to adding a slur over the bar that was devoid of it; no attempts were made to combine this slur with the already printed ones, which would require them to be modified. On the other hand, Chopin would often mark a repeated phrase differently, the first time in more detail. Taking into account the above, as an alternative for the version of FE adopted to the main text, we suggest two other solutions – a continuous slur as in bars 355-357 or two slurs, keeping the whole-bar slur in bar 341 written in A.
In AsI Chopin initially wrote a slur compliant with our second alternative suggestion and then prolonged it to the end of bar 344.
