Shorter slur in FE1, literal reading

Longer slur in FE2 (→EEW) & GE

..

The fact that the slur was not continued after the transition to a new line in FE1 is almost certainly an oversight, corrected – probably by Chopin – in FE2 (→EEW). The mistake was also noticed and corrected in GE.

b. 66

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In GE a crotchet rest was added, filling the 1st beat of the bar in the bottom R.H. voice. Filling the entire bar with rhythmic values of all the written-down voices, advisable in preparing ensemble music scores, is not a priority in the case of piano music performed by one person, hence Chopin would very often omit such filling rests. Due to the above, in the main text we keep the original version of FE (→EEW).

Slur in b. 71 in FE (literal reading →GE1,EEW)

2 slurs in GE2 (→GE3), contextual interpretation

Continuous slur suggested by the editors

..

The slur starting in bar 71 in FE suggests that it should be continued, which is not confirmed by the beginning of bar 72 (in a new line), in which there is no slur. It is difficult to say whether it was also the case for [A], or whether this version resulted from the engraver's carelessness. In GE1 and EEW the slur of FE was interpreted literally, thus encompassing only two notes in bar 71. However, a comparison with bars 59-60 points to a slur reaching the e2 minim as the right one, which we give in the main text. In GE2 (→GE3) a slur was added in bar 72; however, its compliance with the slur in bar 71 was not ensured – the slur starts from the 1st quaver and runs under the notes.
