b. 62

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In FE there is no  raising f1 to f1 in the L.H. chord. The mistake, probably present already in [A], remained unnoticed, in spite of several proofreading rounds of FE. However, it was corrected both in GE and EEW. In the main text we add a cautionary  to a.

b. 62

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

No  in FE

on the 3rd beat of the bar in GE2 (→GE3)

before 3rd beat of the bar in EEW

Our variant suggestion

..

In GE and EEW the absence of  in FE was considered a mistake, and two pedal release moments were suggested – after the 2nd beat in EEW and on the 3rd beat in GE. In the main text we suggest an even longer pedal; however, we leave the final decision concerning the pedalling in this fragment to the performer.

b. 63

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

Chord g-c1-e1 in FE (→EEW) & GE3)

Octave g-g1 in GE1 (→GE2)

..

The version of GE1 (→GE2) with a pianistically awkward and sonically unjustified cluster of g1 notes played by both hands must be erroneous. However, it is difficult to say how such a serious mistake could have happened when reproducing printed text. The mUltimate Chopin editors believe the following scenario to be most likely: in the proof copy of FE1 serving as the basis for GE this crotchet consisted of two notes, g-e1, which was changed in the finished FE1, as a result of which it became a three-note chord, and in GE1 it was reproduced with a Terzverschreibung as an octave. The mistake was noticed and corrected in GE3, almost certainly on the basis of a comparison with FE.

b. 65

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

No mark in FE (→GE1)

 in GE2 (→GE3) & EEW

..

If we were to take into account the pedalling of the entire Mazurka, the absence of  in FE (→GE1) must be considered an oversight. It was added in GE2 (→GE3) and EEW.
