Issues : Errors in FE

b. 138-140

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In FE, the bass clefs at the end of these bars and the treble clef after e in b. 139 were overlooked. The patent mistakes were corrected by GE and EE.

scherzando in A

No indication in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Unlike in the case of the agogic markings in b. 125 and 136, it is difficult to find a justification for a possible abandonment of the scherzando indication. Therefore, we include it in the main text; we signalise its absence in the principal source by using brackets.

Long accent in A

No mark in FE (→GE,EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The accent was overlooked probably due to an oversight by the engraver of FE (→GE,EE), which Chopin possibly did not notice while proofreading FE.

b. 156-157

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Accents in A

No marks in FE (→GE,EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

It seems that the accents – as many other markings – were overlooked by the engraver of FE. However, to respect the image of the text of FE, carefully proofread by Chopin, in the main text we suggest them in a variant form, in brackets.

Slur in A & GE

No slur in FE (→EE)

..

The L.H. slur in A is written down quite vaguely; moreover, it partially blends in with the  hairpin, which was most probably the reason why it was overlooked by FE (→EE). GE added the slur, certainly by analogy with the next bars.
