b. 106-109

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, 8 accidentals are missing: naturals to e in b. 106, e1 in b. 106, 107 and 109, b and b2 in b. 108 and sharps to c3 in b. 107 and f1 in b. 108. FE (→GE1GE2,GE1a) added 5 accidentals, as a result of which it was only the naturals to e1 in b. 107 and 109 and to b2 in b. 108 that were missing. The mark in b. 109 was added by EE, while the one in b. 108 by GE3 (→GE4) and EE3. None of the sources includes the natural to e1 in b. 107.
(Due to the 4th L.H. crotchet in b. 107-108 having been placed on the top stave in A, a  to c1 in b. 107 and a  to b in b. 108 are missing too. In the layout adopted by the editions and in our transcriptions, these accidentals are not necessary.)

It does not seem that Chopin wanted to hold this fourth to the end of the 1st half of the bar, which, as far as the rhythm and harmony are concerned, could be considered justified. The composer could have taken into account the piano grip – releasing the middle fingers makes it easier to perform the chord with grace notes, hence he did not want to suggest that they should be held. Anyway, if we include the authentic pedalling, the difference between both versions is practically imperceptible.

b. 124

In A (→FE), there is not a single accidental in the R.H. passage in the entire 2nd half of the bar. This simplified notation was supplemented both by GE and EE.
