Verbal indications

b. 191

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

No indication in A

ritenuto in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Chopin must have added ritenuto while proofreading FE (→GE,EE). GE used an abbreviation, i.e. riten.

b. 205

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

No dashes in A (→FEEE)

Dashes in GE

Dashes suggested by the editors

..

The il più forte possible indication in b. 206 seems to be a natural end point for cresc. from b. 203. Therefore, we consider the absence of the dashes marking the range of the dynamic change in b. 205 to be an inaccuracy of notation; consequently, we suggest adding them in the main text. Such an addition was also introduced by GE (probably on the basis of a similar reasoning).

b. 238

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

in A

No indication in FE (→GE,EE)

(), our variant suggestion

..

As there are no visible traces of removal of  in FE, it seems that the reason for the absence of this indication in the editions could be attributed to an oversight by the engraver. However, taking into account the possibility that it could have been accepted by Chopin, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 252-253

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

 &  in A

 &  in FE

 in GE

 & 2  in EE

..

The deletions visible in A reveal that Chopin considered the dynamic markings over the R.H. part not suggestive enough and moved them lower, between the parts of both hands. None of the sources reproduced this notation accurately – in FE (→GE) the marks were placed too low, before the L.H. part, while GE overlooked . The revision of EE is noteworthy, i.e. the R.H. chords were moved to the top stave (which we do not include in our transcriptions), and each hand was provided with its own dynamic markings.

b. 256

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

in A

in FE (→GE)

in EE

..

As in b. 252, Chopin deleted in A the  marking placed between the staves and put it before the chords on the bottom stave. The change was not included by FE (→GE,EE); moreover, EE added another  mark before the L.H. part.
