Pedalling in A, literal reading

Pedalling in FE

Pedalling in GE

Pedalling in EE

Pedalling suggested by the editors

..

In A, the pedal asterisks are irregularly distributed; moreover, it seems that they are accidental – the majority before the 3rd crotchet of a given half of the bar, yet some under (the 2nd one in b. 37) or after (the 2nd one in b. 38 and the 1st one in b. 39). Such a notation was not reproduced by FE; however, it is also here that the differences in the placement of the asterisks seem to be accidental – 5 out of 8 marks fall after the 3rd crotchet, while 3 under (in the 1st half of b. 36, 37 and 39). GE and EE tried to homogenise the placement of those marks:

  • in GE all  were placed before the 3rd crotchet except the last one (in b. 39), which was printed under (it should be mentioned that some marks were placed inaccurately, hence it is difficult to determine whether they were to be placed before or under a given note);
  • in EE all  were placed under the 3rd crotchet except the last one, which was printed after.

In the main text we suggest a notation that could be called an averaged notation of A – all  under the 3rd or the 6th crotchet in the bar. We consider such a notation, compliant with the harmonic structure of this fragment, to be a contextual interpretation of the notation of A.
Similar problems are also to be found further on, in b. 40-43 and 138-144.

Slurs from 2nd & 5th crotchet in A

Slurs from 1st & 4th crotchet in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A, the L.H. slurs, although written with a flourish, clearly encompass only the 2nd and 3rd crotchet in each half of the bar. In spite of that, in FE (→GE,EE) the slurs also encompass the 1st crotchet, which expresses the inclination of the engravers to adjust the range of slurs (and dynamic hairpins too) to the rhythmic structures, in this case halves of bars. Slur over 2 crotchets in A

Slur over 2nd half of bar in FE (→GE,EE)

..

As in b. 37-39, FE (→GE,EE) misinterpreted the range of the L.H. slur of A in the 2nd half of the bar (the slur in the 1st half was reproduced correctly).

As in the previous four-bar section, in this and the next bars, the  marks are placed in the sources inaccurately and inconsistently, hence we homogenise their position in the main text.

Two-crotchet slurs in A

Various slurs in FE (→GE)

Half-bar slurs in EE

..

As in the previous bars, FE (→GE) erroneously reproduced the majority of the L.H. slurs – instead of from the 2nd or the 5th crotchet in the bar, they begin earlier, from the 1st or the 4th crotchet. It was only the second slur in b. 41 that was reproduced in accordance with A. EE homogenised the slurs by making the only authentic slur resemble the remaining ones.
