b. 32-33

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Slurs in A, literal reading

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A, the L.H. slurs, written with a flourish, clearly encompass the groups of five repeated chords. In FE (→GE,EE), they begin earlier, which resulted from the routine approach of the engraver of FE, who considered whole-bar slurs to be most likely. The fact that the actual notation of A was interpreted quite liberally is evidenced by the ending of the slur over b. 32, which, in spite of the fact that in A it reaches b. 33, ends on the last crotchet in b. 32 in FE (and rightly so in this case).

Staccato in A

       No marks in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we include the staccato dots under the octaves at the beginning of these bars, most probably overlooked by the engraver of FE (→GE,EE).

b. 33

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, the only cautionary accidental is a  before c at the beginning of the bar. FE (→GE,EE) added a  before C and a  before e1, while EE and GE3 (→GE4) also a  before the gsemiquaver. In the main text we include all the above accidentals.

b. 33

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A (→FE), there is no  before the last semiquaver (e3) in the 1st half of the bar; the  restoring e2 on the 11th small quaver in the 2nd half is missing too. The former was added both by GE and EE; by contrast, none of the editions noticed the absence of the latter.

b. 33

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, the R.H. part in the entire 2nd half of the bar was deleted and rewritten on the stave above. Insofar as it is possible to interpret the legible fragments, the change probably concerned the rhythmic issues only – it can be seen that the first 8 notes of the roulade were provided with semiquaver beams, 4 notes each, as in the 1st half of the bar. The corrections were carried out in two stages: first, Chopin deleted the final fragment of the roulade, which he then rewrote at the end of the line; it was only then that he deleted the entire 2nd half of the bar.
