Slur over R.H. sextuplet in A

Slurs to quavers in both hands in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The slur of A, like in b. 253, encompasses only the sextuplet, whereas in FE the slur encompasses all quavers in the motif. A corresponding L.H. part slur was also added, which confirms that the change was not random. Therefore, we consider the version of the editions to be an expression of Chopin's final intention and give it in the main text.

Broken octaves in A

Regular octaves in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we reproduce the notation of A, in which a diagonally crossed octave means a very fast arpeggio (faster than the one written down with the use of a grace note). The direction in which an octave should be broken results from the notation of the preceding octaves; moreover, it is indicated by the direction of the diagonal line crossing the stem of an octave. The absence of respective lines in the editions probably resulted from the engraver of FE not having understood this notation.

b. 259-261

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In the case of five L.H. octaves, Chopin put an accidental only to one of the notes in A. The following accidentals are missing:  (E) and  (f) in b. 259;  (F) in b. 260;  (C) and  (B1) in b. 261. All the missing accidentals were added by FE (→GE,EE); nevertheless, GE1a once again overlooked the  (E) in b. 259.
