b. 263-264

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE2 b. 263-264 fall between the lines, which could have caused the later start of the slur.

Slur in GE, literal reading

Arpeggio sign in GE (contextual interpretation) & FE

No sign in EE

..

As was the case with analogous b. 31, the slur of GE, although formally correct, is most probably inaccurate and marks a grace note and an arpeggio (written down as a vertical slur), as was conveyed in FE. The absence of a slur (arpeggio) in EE, whatever the reason, cannot be authentic.

Slurs from E to g in GE1 (contextual interpretation) & FE (→EE)

Slurs from  F1 to a in GE2

Slurs from E to a, our alternative suggestion

..

Like in b. 61-64, in the main text we give the unequivocal slurs of FE (→EE). The slurs of GE1, starting earlier, may convey the inaccurate notation of [A], which most probably indicates slurs of the same range. The version of GE2 must be arbitrary. Our alternative suggestion is based on the assumption that the engravers could have routinely interpreted the endings of the slurs.

b. 295

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE and FE1 there is no accidental to the bottom note of the L.H. chord on the 3rd beat of the bar (d). FE2 and EE added a , which we include in the main text. This and other additions were also introduced in b. 296-297.

b. 296-297

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE and FE1 there are no accidentals to the d notes (in various octaves) on the 3rd beat of both bars. The remaining editions added the following naturals:

  • FE2 to the bottom note of the L.H. chord in b. 296 (d) and to d2 in both bars;
  • EE1 to d and d2 in b. 296;
  • EE2 also to d1 and d2 in b. 297.

In the main text we include only the L.H. accidentals.
