b. 199-200

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

a-b slur in GE & FE

No arc in EE1

Tie to b in EE2 (→EE3)

..

The tie to b was reproduced correctly only in EE2 (→EE3). The inaccuracies of the remaining editions resulted from the Chopinesque manner of writing down ties as short, quite thick curved lines, not running from a note to the other one, but placed next to the attached note (cf., e.g. the first page of the autograph of the Mazurka in G major, Op. 50 No. 1, particularly the e-e1 octaves in b. 18-20 and 22-24). In the discussed bars of the Polonaise, the parts of both hands (4 voices!) are written down on the bottom stave, which could have been an additional obstacle to the correct interpretation and reproduction of that tie. There is a similar situation two bars later.

The slur of FE (→EE) over b. 198-200, which ends in the same place, is discussed separately.

In FE (→EE1) the dots prolonging the E and b minims were overlooked. The mistake was corrected in EE2 (→EE3). See also the next note.

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Slur d1-b in FE (→EE1)

Tie to b in GE & EE2 (→EE3)

..

In FE the tie to b was inaccurately reproduced, as a result of which it looks like a slur meant to combine d1 on the 3rd beat of b. 201 with b in b. 202. This is how it was understood in EE1, in which a slur clearly combines those two notes. The patent mistake was corrected in EE2 (→EE3).

Minim B tied to bar 202 in GE & EE2 (→EE3)

Minim B in FE

Minim d in EE1

..

The version of FE must be incomplete, which is supported by a comparison with all analogous places – b. 142-145, 162-165, 203-204 and 221-224. However, it is difficult to say whether it resulted from oversights of FE or of its earlier handwritten basis or whether Chopin supplemented the notation of [A] after [FC] had already been finished. In EE1 that version was reproduced with a Terzverschreibung mistake on the 2nd beat of b. 201. In the main text we give the correct version of GE, undoubtedly intended by Chopin, introduced also by the reviser of EE2 (→EE3).

The missing tie and B in FE (→EE1) are probably an oversight of the engraver, corrected in EE2 (→EE3).
