  b. 5

b1 in A (→FC,FEEE)

a1 in GE

Taking into account the simplicity of the text and the fact that b1 is totally distinct in FC, the presence of the erroneous a1 note in GE seems to be puzzling – both the engraver and proofreader of GE1 must have committed a mistake (it is uncertain whether the reviser of GE2 compared the edition with the manuscript). What is more, the same, uncorrected mistake is present in analogous b. 23. In spite of that, nothing indicates that the version of GE could be legitimate; it must be a mistake – Chopin could not have participated in the development of GE, and the passage could hardly prompt a revision.
