b. 30

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

in AI and GE2

No mark in A

in GE1 (→FEEE)

Our suggestion

..

There is no asterisk  in A . In the main text we give that mark at the end of the bar, just like Chopin did in the analogous bar 6. In GE1 (→FEEE) the mark was added under the rest on the 3rd beat of the bar,  following the usual manner in which such marks were interpreted in that edition. In the editors' opinion, editorial revision is slightly more probable here than Chopin's correction. In GE2 is placed earlier, before the rest. The mark in AI (in bar 6, of which bar 30 is a repetition) has a similar position, yet conformity with GE2 is definitely accidental.

A  has the asterisks  written at the end of those bars, although the mark in bar 37, when read literally, falls under the 3rd crotchet.  In GE1 (→FE) all the three marks are placed under the 3rd crotchet. In EE, the notation of FE in bars 37-38 was reproduced inaccurately, evidently due to graphic difficulties (pedalling for the last line, from bar 37, was written between the staves). In GE2 attempts were probably made to reproduce the notation of A, yet the effect of the changes  in bar 36, and particularly in bar. 38, is unclear.

The pedal release sign is written in A at the end of the bar. However, in this particular case this falls out almost perfectly below the 3rd crotchet. In the main text, we adopt a notation taken from the analogous bar 12 (2nd ending). EE shifted to the left. (This bar is absent from AI.)
