Both versions of the dynamic indications written in the teaching copies point to the use of the echo effect. The entry in FES, which, as it seems, defines a more distinct contrast, was written by Chopin most probably on a piano music rack, which is evidenced by a characteristically careless handwriting. Therefore, it would be an 'on-the-go' remark, aimed at stimulating the pupil to a more suggestive performance. The entry in FEJ suggests a subtler difference and was most probably addressed to a person with more advanced piano skills. In the main text – having faith in the performer's intuition – we give the indications of FES, since they are clearer.
