Slurs

b. 13-14

composition: WN 37, Lento con gran espressione

No slurs in A1, CK & EL

Slur in bar 14 in CJ

Slur from bar 13 in CB

..

In the main text we give a slur in the 2nd half of b. 14, written in CJ. The absence of this slur in CK and EL probably results from Kolberg's oversight. It is likely that upon seeing the text of CK devoid of slurs, Balakirev decided to repeat in CB the slur from analogous b. 5-6.

Slur under grace notes in A1

No slur in CJ, CK (→CB) & EL

..

Judging from the copies based on [A2], it did not feature the little slur under the group of grace notes. Therefore, we do not include it in the main text, since Chopin probably considered it superfluous.

Slur over 4th beat suggested by the editors

..

The slurs of the sources, encompassing neither melodically nor rhythmically distinctive fragments of the scale, are probably inaccurate. This conclusion is confirmed by the slur of CK, encompassing the 4th beat of the bar, in analogous b. 48, and this is the slur we suggest in the main text as a contextual interpretation of the source slurs. Nevertheless, encompassing with a slur the final fragment of a figuration only seems to be illogical, regardless of its actual range. According to us, it is likely that the articulation of this sequence is defined by two indications present in this bar both in A1 and [A2] (→CJ,CK) – con forza at the beginning and the slur at the end.

2 L.H. slurs in A1 & CB

No slurs in CJ, CK & EL

We do not suggest the slurs of A1 in the main text, since Chopin replaced them in [A2] (→CJ,CK) by the indication legato.

2 slurs in CK (→CB)

The slur written in CK over the 1st accompaniment figure most probably comes from [A2], hence we give it in the main text (due to the abridged notation of the 2nd half of the bar as repetition of the 1st half, we consider this slur to have been repeated over the 2nd figure). The slurs – just like for the most part of the Lento – are also in CB.
