  b. 17-23

4 staccato dots in AI

Dots in bar 17, 19 & 21 in AF

Dot in bar 19 in FE

Dots in bars 19, 21 & 23

No marks in EE

The performance of b. 17-24 was meticulously marked with slurs, staccato marks and accents already in AI. The subsequent sources did not always succeed in reproducing all the details (due to oversights and mistakes). After all, the final version offered more opportunities for mistakes, since this section became a part of the 32-bar extension added after b. 104 as b. 109-116. Notwithstanding the accidental inaccuracies, Chopin also introduced certain modifications:

  • he provided the beginning of b. 109 in AF with a wedge, and not a dot,
  • he added slurs between b. 18-19, 20-21 and analog. (inaccurately – in AF he overlooked the slur in b. 20-21 and 114-115),
  • he abandoned the staccato dot over the g1-b1 third at the beginning of b. 20.

The composer's intention with respect to the staccato dots in the L.H. part is unclear – see b. 19-24.

In the main text we reproduce the notation of AI, taking into account the aforementioned modifications. A detailed description of all the differences between the sources and of our editorial decisions is included in the notes concerning individual places.
