Crotchet f1 in AI & AF (→FEEE)

Quaver f1 in GE

In the main text we give the simplified – most probably by Chopin in [AG] – notation of GE. Excluding the graphical changes, they differ only in the rhythmic value of the f1 note played on the 2nd quaver of the bar. The compliance with AI proves that the version of AF is earlier than GE. It is confirmed by a comparison with analogous b. 158, in which Chopin did not extend the respective note (b).
In AI the notation of this bar, and of its counterpart 8 bars earlier, is of draft nature. One can observe numerous crossings-out – in the L.H. the same notes were written, crossed out and reintroduced. In this situation, it is almost impossible to unravel all the tested versions. According to us, Chopin started from the following version , which he then modified in the L.H. part . The final version corresponds to the one that was then written in AF.
