  b. 87

Triads in AI

Sixths in AF (→FEEE)

Sixth & triad in GE

In b. 87-88, the last two of the 8 bars added in the margin in AF, the accompaniment differs from the versions of the remaining sources in three places:

  • in b. 87 Chopin initially wrote the original version (preserved in AI) with two triads. He then crossed out both chords, replacing them with sixths. Therefore, the correction goes further than those the composer introduced in the analogous bars in AI. The reason for another approach may have been the figurative variant of the melody and the will to avoid the cluster of g-b with a1. However, the cluster cannot be consider striking, since it did not draw Chopin's attention two bars earlier. Therefore, we may be dealing with Chopin's mistake: he could have been completing the manuscript in haste; moreover, it cannot be ruled out that he was doing it from memory;
  • the f-d1 sixths in b. 88 are absent in all sources that are not based on AF, in all stages of the text's evolution and in all analogous places. If we take into account the fact that d1 on the 2nd beat of the bar slightly hampers the performance of the R.H. melody and was omitted or removed from the f-b-d1 chords by Chopin in these places, a mistake in this crotchet becomes highly likely;
  • the 3rd crotchet in b. 88 may also be erroneous, although in this case it is less obvious, since a sixth is present in GE in analogous b. 56 and in a similar context – before G as a new base. Therefore, we suggest a variant version with in brackets as an alternative.

On the basis of the above observations, one can have serious doubts whether these changes actually constitute a separate authentic version of this place. Therefore, to the main text we adopt the version of GE.
