b. 40

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

 in A1

No sign in FE (→EE) & GE

Our variant suggestion

..

The  hairpin written in A1 in b. 39-40 was overlooked in FE (→EE). In turn, the absence of the mark in GE may mean that Chopin decided not to use that indication in [A2] (→GE). However, other explanations are also likely, hence in the main text we suggest an alternative solution. Due to the fact that the notation of the R.H. part in b. 40 in A1 is incomplete, the range of the mark is ambiguous, and the range we suggest is one of the possible interpretations.

b. 60-64

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

Different accents in A1, literal reading

Short accents in FE (→EE) & GE

..

In b. 60-62 and 64 in the main text we give the short accents featured in the editions, since the homogeneous rhythmic and articulation context prompts us to such an interpretation also in the case of the longer marks, written in A1 in b. 60, 61 and 64. See also b. 63, 65-66 and 67.

b. 63

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

Accent in A1 (→FEEE)

No mark in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

In the main text we include the accent of A1 (→FEEE) (in a variant form), since in this case Chopin's intentional omission of a mark seems to be less likely. GE feature an accent in analogous b. 79, which means that it was most probably present in [A2] in the discussed bar.

b. 65-66

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

No markings in A1 (→FEEE)

cresc. in GE

..

In the main text we give the cresc. indication in b. 65 and the  mark in b. 66, added by Chopin probably in the proofreading of GE1. The composer replaced with them the accents on the 3rd beat of those bars, present in A1 (→FEEE). The change shows a version of dynamics with longer breath, closer related to the ascending melodic sequence, as superior to a regular mazurka accentation.

b. 65-66

composition: Op. 50 No. 2, Mazurka in A♭ major

Short & long accent in A1, literal reading

2 short accents in FE (→EE)

No accents in GE

..

The accents on the 3rd beat of these bars were probably removed in the proofreading of GE and replaced by Chopin with the cresc. and  markings (it is indicated by the traces of removal of analogous marks in b. 81-82). Therefore, we do not include them in the main text.
The issue concerning the length of the accents: see b. 60-64.
