Accent in A1 (→FEEE)

No mark in GE

Our variant suggestion

According to us, the absence of an accent on the 3rd beat of the bar in GE is rather an oversight of the engraver:

  • there are no visible reasons for this phrase to be marked differently, since in A1, and most probably also in [A2], it was not written out at all. Due to the fact that in analogous b. 79 there is an accent in GE, the absence of a mark in the discussed bar is probably a mistake;
  • except for this bar, all bars closing particular four-bar sections are accented in the sources, which is also an argument for an erroneous omission of the accent;
  • moreover, it does not seem that Chopin removed the accent in the proofreading of GE1. In b. 65-66 and 81-82, in which such corrections most probably took place, it was related to replacing the accents with a cresc. indication or with a  mark. Therefore, in the discussed phrase the absence of an accent could be justified rather in b. 62 than in 63.

Taking into account the above observations, in the main text we include the accent of A1 (→FEEE) in a variant form.
